Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Sura Ghazal says, "Working with Special Olympics makes me feel happy because I gain more hope in humanity. Don’t miss the opportunity!”

Special Olympics helps a student in the Middle East gain hope in humanity

by Abeer Anwar

In 2003, during her last year in school, Sura Ghazal, 17, started volunteering with Special Olympics Jordan. She heard about Special Olympics through her physical education teacher.

Ghazal was immediately attracted to the Movement. “I have a student with intellectual disabilities in my school, and I love to help all people with different disabilities,” she said.

Her first experience with Special Olympics Jordan was to participate in a Special Olympics Unified Sports® competition. Because of her dedication and will, Ghazal was chosen to represent the Middle East/North Africa region at the Global Youth Summit held in Ireland during the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

“My experience in Ireland was fantastic, as I had the chance to work with people and athletes from all over the world. Working with Special Olympics makes me feel happy because I gain more hope in humanity,” she declared. Ghazal invites everyone she meets to volunteer with Special Olympics and discover the wonders of working with Special Olympics athletes. “Don’t miss the opportunity!”

Abeer Anwar is Sports Editor for Al Ahram Weekly Newspaper.
