Ten Unified Volleyball teams from across Europe are battling it out in Istanbul this week (from June 20-22nd) for the title of 2013 European Unified Volleyball Champions. But whoever does grab the title, one teammate from Austria named Charlie already regards himself as winning.

"Before joining Special Olympics,” says Charlie, “I never had contact with people with intellectual disabilities. But now thanks to playing on my Unified Volleyball Team and just doing something that I love to do – play volleyball, I am gaining all these new experiences and friendships.”

The tournament began with an opening ceremony on Thursday, June 20 supported by volleyball stars from Turkeys’ leading professional club Galatasarysk. After observation matches, 10 teams were divisioned into three groups according to their ability level. Group matches began on Friday (June 21st) with the final taking place on Saturday (June 22nd).
