An athlete from Senegal takes part in the NBA Unified Sports All Star Jam.

By Ms Rajah Diouri SY

11 Special Olympics Athletes were granted the opportunity to participate in the 3rd Annual NBA Cares Special Olympics Unified® Sports Basketball game; part of this year’s NBA All Star Jam Sessions in New Orleans, Louisiana in February. The NBA Legends line-up included the likes of Dikembe Mutombo, Ron Harper, Detlef Schremp, A.C Green, Tamika Catchings, Elena Delle Donne, Lindsay Harding, and Ruth Riley. The event was aired live on ESPN3! The four day extravaganza featured a variety of activities that spread out throughout the city to encourage social responsibility and inclusion. Africa was proudly represented by Ms Kady Konè from Special Olympics Senegal. The NBA global partnership with Special Olympics began more than 30 years ago, when the league helped to introduce basketball as a new sport to the organisation. This has spread out to most regions and is becoming increasingly popular in Africa.
