By Joanna Despotopoulou

Nearly 400 Special Olympics Hellas athletes participated in the Special 1000m race within the framework of the 31st Athens Classic Marathon on 10 November 2013, celebrating together with their coaches, family members and volunteers. Artemis Vassilikopoulou, National Director of Special Olympics Hellas, gave the start and ran together with the athletes. Special Olympics Hellas President Joanna Despotopoulou cheered the participants at the finish line in the Marble Panathinaikon Stadium. She was joined by members of the Hellenic Athletics Federation and together presented awards afterwards. More than 30,000 participants took part in the marathon. The sun was bright, the temperature was warm, and Athenians lined the route applauding all of the runners with big smiles.
