Athletes travel far and wide to Uitenhage for Healthy Athletes

By Mmane Boikanyo

A Healthy Athletes screening clinic reached the town of Uitenhage on 14 September 2013. Just over 200 athletes attended the screening with many athletes and guardians traveling long distances. The Eastern Cape Province has become notorious for poor health care to its citizens, especially those in the rural areas making this screening such a valuable service to a marginalized population. Nomathabanize’s sons’ began having trouble with their teeth in December 2012 and she was unable to receive any assistance at the PHC clinic. She took time off work in order to walk for an hour and a half to the clinic because she couldn’t afford transport. On arrival, she was turned away as only the first 15 individuals to arrive at the clinic would be seen. As a result, her son never received treatment at the clinic and has been suffering with dental decay for almost a year. Thanks to Special Olympics Healthy Athletes as her son received a referral which will allow her to visit the nearest district or provincial hospital.
