Catholic Relief Services and Special Olympics Partnership Underway in Malawi

By Kristin Hughes

The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Special Olympics partnership is underway in Malawi! The week of 24 November, three Special Olympics Regional Coordinators in Malawi and Felix Chisowa, National Director of Special Olympics Malawi, participated in CRS’ “In Charge!” training. “In Charge!” is an action learning program on HIV that helps young people improve self-efficacy skills, avoid risky behaviors associated with HIV infection and reduce stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV and other vulnerable groups. “In Charge!” also encourages discussions around gender roles and strategies that boys and girls can use to avoid sexual assault and other forms of abuse. Special Olympics Malawi participants reported that they gained critical skills and that “In Charge!” would be very valuable to Special Olympics athletes and their families. Special Olympics Malawi plans to conduct the “In Charge” program in five districts, through the trained Special Olympics facilitators, targeting over 1000 athletes and 40 coaches.
