By Drew Boshell

Team of volunteer dental students on hand to assist Peruvian athletes

Seventeen dental students from Universidad de San Martin de Porres were on hand at the Lima Metropolitan Games to provide oral health exams for 40 Special Olympics Peru athletes. Through the Healthy Community partnership, athletes needing follow up treatment are provided appointments to receive treatment at the university clinic at reduced fees. Director of University Outreach and Community Service, Dr. Silvana Anduaga Lescano stated that "This opportunity makes our dental students better providers for both individuals with and without intellectual disabilities as it teaches patience and empathy". Special Olympics Peru is part of the global Healthy Communities initiative supported by the Golisano Foundation to reduce disparities in access to health care for people with intellectual disability.
