Dong-Chun School in Seoul -- A Full Community of Joy

By Brady Lum

Dong Chun School Host Town Visit with Team USA

I met a bright light of inspiration yesterday, Ms. Sun-Kyung Sung, Director of the Dong-Chun Institute in Seoul. She welcomed athletes and coaches from Team USA as part of the Host Town Program. Special Olympics Board Member Ossie Kilkenny joined me for what we thought would be a school tour for children with Special Needs. To our amazement, Ms. Sung has created a lifelong community of learning, work, fitness, and joy. Outside of the first class school, she built thriving Hat manufacturing business and an ink cartridge refilling business, both employing dozens of her graduates with intellectual disability. She built a world-class fitness center and Olympic class skating rink to bring the community of people with and without disabilities together. She is a living example of the kind of Founding energy that Eunice Kennedy Shriver brought to Special Olympics. We left with a new vision of what is possible and a great boost of hope as we begin these World Games!
