Russian National Conference Calls for Greater Government Partnerships

By Maureen Rabbitt

Children from the Vologda Special School welcomed Conference participants and gave a wonderful performance about the history and the culture of Vologda, a region famous for its beautiful lace artistry.

Special Olympics Russia dedicated their 2013 National Conference to the memory of our founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. The Conference took place from October 11-12 in the Vologda region and was attended by 85 participants from 32 regions of Russia. This year the focus was on encouraging greater cooperation with the Government, and was attended by Mr. Sergey Fokichev, from the Regional Department of Physical Culture and Sports. Speaking at the Conference Mary Davis, Regional President of Special Olympics Europe Eurasia said: “Close co-operation with local sports schools, orphanages and the Department of Education is important so we can reach more and more children and adults with an intellectual disability and change their lives and communities through sports.” Highlights of the Conference included a speech from Vologda athlete Denis Trofimov, captain of the Special Olympics Vologda Basketball team who talked about how Special Olympics gave him the confidence and dignity to live his life fully.
