Special Olympics Poland successfully complete Family and Young Athletes project

By Maureen Clarke

Young Athletes in Poland

Special Olympics Poland has just completed a twelve month project which enabled them to further develop the Family & Young Athletes programmes with thanks to the Samuel Family Foundation and the State Fund for Rehabilitation of Disabled People (PFRON). The project began with a European training seminar in Bialobrzegi, Poland involving twenty-two family members as well as family representatives from 5 other national programmes: Belarus, Georgia, Lithuania, Russia & Ukraine. Participants were successfully trained as Family Leaders and Community Builders over the three-day seminar. The non-Polish participants progressed to become Family & Young Athletes coordinators in their own national programmes. The seminar was followed by ten Family Forums and Young Athletes events in six regions of Poland. Special Olympics Poland has successfully registered 53 new Young Athletes and 52 new family members as a result of the overall project. Well done to all involved.
