Youth Summit and Games in Tanzania

Special Olympics Tanzania commemorated Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day for the fourth time this year. The Tanzania Program hosted a Youth Summit and games with a total of 100 attendees. 50 learners from Kibiha Secondary School and 50 athletes who all participated in a Youth Summit. To assist with the Summit were three youths that had been trained during the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Greece, Dr. Gurishaeli Walter Nkamba, athlete Ramahani Msofe and partner Kelvin Mwise. They began the summit with a discussion on the Spread the Word to End The Word campaign and stressed the issues of inclusion and acceptance. After the presentation the attendees met on the playing field to form Unified® teams in football and athletics. The teams then competed in the different sports. In the words of Special Olympics Tanzania National Director, Mr. Frank Macha, “The mission was achieved. Through sport new friendships were made both on and off the field. “
