Togo Celebrates Special Olympics with a Parade and Torch Run

By Mr Komla Galley

Special Olympics Togo held a Law Enforcement Torch Run to celebrate Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day. The city of Lomè came out in full force to watch as civil society and the law enforcement officers joined together with Special Olympics Togo in the run. Several other local administration authorities were in attendance and the entire Special Olympics Togo family. They led our athletes and their families in a parade to show them that they are not alone. The procession with over 500 participants, including Special Olympics athletes, family members, coaches, volunteers and media started at the Central Police Station and Congress Palace High profile guests included the US Ambassador, representatives from the Ministries of Social Welfare and Sports, the Head of the National Association for Disabled People, the Head of the Gendarmerie, and the Head of the National Police. Many people believed that this initiative was unique in Togo and many were interested in signing and offering to help. The event received wide media coverage, and has without doubt created great awareness for the Special Olympics Togo program.
