Training Young Leaders in Albania

By Eva Zace

"We want to be Special Olympics Youth Leaders"

In Albania, youth with and without intellectual disabilities participated in discussions and activities to develop leadership skills young people will need to be agents of change in their schools. Young people from Sinan Tafaj and Sami Frasheri mainstream schools joined Special Olympics Albania athletes for their first inclusive experience on 20-21 March 2014 in Tirana. The event was supported by the Mattel Children’s Foundation and organized by Special Olympics Albania. In April, the students will come together again for their first Unified Sports experience, forming teams of people with and without intellectual disabilities. Representatives of Special Olympics Kosovo under UNSCR 1244/99 and Special Olympics FYR Macedonia also participated. Participation of the FYR Macedonian coach was supported by a Christmas Record Grant. Also Peace Corps Volunteers helped to facilitate the school workshops.
