Illinois Winter Games

What is Winter Games? Winter Games is one of 9 state sports competitions. It is the culminating competition for those participating in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Winter Games is hosted at Chestnut Mountain in Galena, Illinois. Approximately 400 athletes will compete in this 3-day event and show off their winning form! Sports competition runs from Tuesday, February 3, to Thursday, February 5. The public is invited and encouraged to attend any and all parts of Special Olympics Illinois Winter Games. 2015 Polar Bear Plunge

The Special Olympics D.C. Polar Bear Plunge brings together children and adults who are interested in two things: raising money to support the athletes of Special Olympics D.C. and having fun doing something wild! The Polar Bear Plunge will occur on two weekends in a row in different locations. Special Olympics D.C. provides essential year-round sports training and competition programs for children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the District of Columbia. Anyone can be a part of this cool event (participants under the age of 18 require a parent or guardian signature), as long as you raise a minimum of $50 (but hopefully more!).

Twelve (12) Special Olympics athletes have been selected to participate in this season’s NBA Cares Unified Sports®Basketball Game. This Special Olympics Unified Sports® experience will combine an equal number of Special Olympics athletes (individuals with intellectual disabilities) and partners (individuals without intellectual disabilities) on teams for a 5-­-on-­-5 Basketball game with 12 players on each team. Each team will be comprised of 6 NBA legends and WNBA players and 6 Special Olympics athletes. Skating Championships

What is the Skating Championships? The Skating Championships are one of 9 state sports competitions. It is the culminating competition for those participating in figure skating and speed skating. The Skating Championships are hosted at Canlan Ice Sports in Romeoville, Illinois. Special Olympics Illinois will be holding this event in a new venue this year with the goal of increasing participation. Canlan Ice Sports is an amazing facility and will hopefully be more accessible and less costly for agencies and families attending the event.

2015 Special Olympics British Columbia Winter Games

Set be held in Kamloops February 19 to 21, the 2015 Special Olympics British Columbia Winter Games will feature 600 athletes from around the province going for gold in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, floor hockey, snowshoeing, and speed skating. SOBC athletes province-wide competed in Regional Qualifiers in 2014 to earn coveted spots in the 2015 Provincial Games. In Kamloops, athletes will compete for the chance to advance to the 2016 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, where the participants will seek to qualify for the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria. The curling, figure skating, and speed skating events will be hosted at McArthur Island Sports and Events Centre, and floor hockey events will be held in School District #73 schools. The alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing events will be hosted at Sun Peaks Resort. The Games will kick off with the Opening Ceremony on the evening of February 19 at the Tournament Capital Centre, where all the teams will get to march in proudly and be welcomed to Kamloops.
