Escort for the "Flame of Hope"

By Capt Jack Orr

Receiving the "Flame of Hope" in Athens, Greece.

I work for a Special Olympics sponsor UPS, and had the Honor of escorting the "Flame of Hope" on its first leg to the 2015 Special Olympic Games, Monday, May 18, 2015. On board a UPS B767 we transported the "Flame of Hope" from Athens, Greece to Cologne Germany where it continued its journey to the United States.View Story I work for a Special Olympics sponsor UPS, and had the Honor of escorting the "Flame of Hope" on its first leg to the 2015 Special Olympic Games, Monday, May 18, 2015. On board a UPS B767 we transported the "Flame of Hope" from Athens, Greece to Cologne Germany where it continued its journey to Philadepelphia then Washington DC in the US. Escorting the flame and meeting Special Olympic staff, volunteers, and atheletes in Greece and Germany was a humbling and emotional experience. One of which I shall never forget. I plan to witness the beginning of the Unified Torch relay on Tuesday, when it begins its historic journey Tuesday May 26 from Marlins Stadium in Miami, Fla to LA.

About Capt Jack Orr:I am an Assistant Chief Pilot and B767 Captain for UPS Airlines, living in Pembroke Pines, Fla. with Wife Millie. We have 3 children John, Tracy and Shannon, and 5 grandsons, Matthew, Samuel, Seth, Terri, and Jack.

I love Special Olympics!

By Sarah Ball

I would recommend everyone to volunteer at any Special Olympics wherever is closer to you. It will open up your eyes, and you will realize how much people with disabilities are the same as us.View Story I've been doing Special Olympics as a volunteer for the last 2 years and I've also done Special Friends (club for kids and adults with special needs) for almost 5 years. I absolutely love it... Even though I'm only 16, my love for kids/adults for special needs grown so much. Watching how much they love to be cheered on in different invents put a huge smile on my face. I would recommend everyone to volunteer at any Special Olympics wherever is closer to you. It will open up your eyes, and you will realize how much people with disabilities are the same as us.

Remembering a Special Olympics Champion

By Kate McKenna

North Carolina athlete Marty Sheets has been a big part of Special Olympics since the very first International Games were held in 1968. He died May 19 at the age of 62. He leaves a legacy of bravery, perseverance and joy to all who knew him.View Story North Carolina athlete Marty Sheets has been a big part of Special Olympics since the very first International Games were held in 1968. He died May 19 at the age of 62. He leaves a legacy of bravery, perseverance and joy to all who knew him. Marty was a pioneer and a role model to younger athletes. He's been present for, or the center of, many important moments in Special Olympics history. He was there in 1987, marching in the Parade of Athletes with Team North Carolina and music star John Denver. In 1995, Marty got to sit with President and Mrs. Clinton at the Opening Ceremony of the 1995 Special Olympics World Summer Games at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut. Marty is forever immortalized as one of five people with an intellectual disability featured in a famed portrait of Eunice Kennedy Shriver commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and put on display in 2009. Shared Values leads to year-round support in Virginia

By Jennifer Robinson

Davis & Green Electrical was first introduced to Special Olympics Virginia when one of our employees learned about Over the Edge Richmond and decided to start a fundraising teamView Story Davis & Green Electrical was first introduced to Special Olympics Virginia when one of our employees learned about Over the Edge Richmond and decided to start a fundraising team. Our first year, we raised $500. In 2015, our 7-person team raised more than $2,500 for Richmond's inaugural Polar Plunge benefiting Special Olympics Virginia! The more that our company learned about Special Olympics, the more we realized that we share many of the same values. At Davis & Green Electrical, we focus on and nurture the strengths and abilities of our employees - not their weaknesses. Special Olympics Virginia embodies this same philosophy, teaching us "that we are all vulnerable and valuable at the same time." Davis & Green Electrical is proud to be a sponsor of the 2015 Virginia Summer Games next month and looks forward to helping nurture the athletic achievements of children and adults who will be participating. Game On!

About Jennifer Robinson:I am Marketing Coordinator for Davis & Green Electrical in Richmond, Virginia.
