Safeway
Working through its local Programs in the United States, Special Olympics is part of Safeway's customer fundraising campaign for people with disabilities.
In 2008 Safeway Inc., one of the United States’ leading retailers, added Special Olympics as a beneficiary of its successful April fundraising and awareness-raising campaign that highlights the unique abilities of people with intellectual disabilities, celebrating their commitment to their jobs and communities. Throughout the month of April shoppers are asked at checkout if they would like to donate $1 or more to support people with disabilities. The campaign takes place in all 21 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and throughout Canada where Safeway does business.
Through customer donations at register, Safeway raised $10 million in 2008, $11.2 million in 2009, $10.7 million in 2010, and $10.4 million in 2011 to support two of the most prominent organizations that assist people with disabilities: Easter Seals and Special Olympics. The 2011 campaign kicked off at a launch event in Alameda, California on March 29th. The event featured Special Olympics athletes lighting a torch to officially mark the start of the campaign. Soccer Star Brandi Chastain — whose momentous game-winning kick for the 1999 World Cup Championship led to one of the most memorable celebrations in sports — was joined by Cathy Rigby, the Olympic Gymnast who went on to capture the hearts of the world as Broadway’s Peter Pan, to help celebrate achievements of people with disabilities.
Safeway employs thousands of people with disabilities and has been recognized by the Department of Labor and numerous nonprofit organizations for its commitment to providing meaningful employment opportunities to people with disabilities.
