In recognition for his outstanding leadership and service to people with intellectual disabilities, the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry has awarded Special Smiles Founder Dr. Steve Perlman with the Dr. Robert E. Cooke Achievement Award. Dr. Perlman recalled first meeting Dr. Cooke after treating Rosemary Kennedy. "At that meeting, Dr. Cooke gave me his blessing and wishes to bring health into the Special Olympics movement. I keep in touch with Bob and called him to tell him how honored I was to receive the award named after him. He is still sharp but his health is failing-he is now 92 years old. I want to share my happiness in receiving this award as I know how much Dr. Cooke has done for the Special Olympics movement."
