For 19 year old athlete Yao Armand from the Abengourou sub-program, in the east of Côte d’Ivoire, being selected to represent his country at the 2012 Special Olympics Africa Unity Cup was a dream come true. Even more exciting was the fact that Cote d’Ivoire qualified to participate in the 2014 Special Olympics Unified Cup in Brazil. His joy did not stop there however. By far the most dramatic impact of his participation was receiving brand new corrective glasses officially presented to him in May by the Lions Club Abenguoruo. During the Healthy Athletes screening at the 2012 Special Olympics Africa unity Cup Yao was given a prescription for the glasses and Lions Clubs International made sure that they were delivered to him. Yao expressed his joy and gratitude to the representatives of the Lions Club Abengourou for the supplying the new glasses which now give him a better sight and will in turn improve his performance in sports. Mr. Jean-Louis IBA, President of the Lions Club Abengourou said,” I did not know about Special Olympics and I had no idea what it could be before the meeting this day, but today I have discovered the movement and I am committed to supporting it.”
