Special Olympics Namibia (SOM) hosted their first Camp Shriver in Windhoek, which coincided with the official launch of the Camp Katutura Multi-purpose Youth Centre. The focus of the camp was to provide a Unified® Sports experience in basketball for both with and without an intellectual disability. SOM drew from10 main stream schools and 3 Special Schools for a total 110 participants, 10 coaches and 5 youth leaders. The Camp was concluded with an EKS Unified® Basketball challenge at the Windhoek International School Sports grounds. The match was attended by the President of the Basketball Federation Mr. George Simataa, the National Director of the Namibia Schools Sports Union Mr. Solly Duiker, Nampower Foundation Head, Mrs. Lucia Haivelua, and celebrity radio personality and SOM Ambassador, Emma Areses. SOM vice Chairperson, Dr. Kagiso Moloi, officially opened the games. The event was very interactive. Campers got divided into teams and each had to come up with a group name and battle song. They were also expected to work together to get fans to cheer them from the stands. Their coaches assessed them on team work, organisation and charisma. Great partnerships resulted from this event with Katutura Multipurpose Youth Centre, the Ministry of National Youth Service, Sports and Culture, Nampower, Basketball artists school, Namibia School Sports Union and Coca Cola.
