Keeping the Fire of Regional Games in Turkey

In March, Special Olympics athletes from the Aegean region of Turkey competed in regional games in Muğla, Turkey. Two hundred athletes participated in the Games which were organized in collaboration with Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University. Athletes competed in athletics and swimming as well as Unified football and Unified basketball competitions with 100 Unified players. The university recruited 160 students to serve as volunteers. The Opening Ceremony included speeches by Special Olympics Turkey Board Member Necmettin Aydın, University Rector Prof. Dr. Mansur Harmandar, Governor of Muğla Amir Çiçek and Special Olympics Turkey athlete Cem Kaya. Aydın said, “As Special Olympics Turkey, in 2016 we almost touched 18.000 people; with athletes, coaches, volunteers and families, we became a big family.”. During the Games, all athletes were screened in four health disciplines by 50 volunteers, health professionals and medical students from the university.
