Whatever the World Cup results may be, the Icelandic team definitely has very enthusiastic young Special Olympics supporters cheering them on from back home!

There has long been a strong cooperation between the Football Federation in Iceland and Special Olympics Iceland, and this was deepened in 2018 with a football project to mark 50 years of Special Olympics. As part of the 50th celebrations, Special Olympics athletes from Klettaskóli special school were invited to line up alongside their heroes before kick-off at a friendly pre-World Cup game between Iceland and Norway.

The coaches of Norway and Iceland, Lars Lagerback and Heimir Hallgrimsson, are both long-time friends of Special Olympics so it was no surprise that the coaches and the players proudly welcomed the young Special Olympics athletes to the pitch. It was also no surprise that the young athletes charmed the players, fans and viewers alike!
