A Letter from Congressman Steny Hoyer, In Memoriam

Hoyer Statement on the Passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver:

"The world mourns a great loss today with the passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. She was a tireless advocate for millions of people worldwide with intellectual disabilities. Her lifelong work enhanced their lives, and her efforts to promote acceptance have improved our society by fundamentally changing our understanding and increasing our knowledge.

"Eunice Kennedy Shriver will long be remembered for founding the Special Olympics, a movement that showcases and celebrates the abilities and talents of those with intellectual disabilities. This program, through her efforts, has done more to promote inclusion, understanding, and respect than anything before.

"Her legacy lives on through the countless individuals who are able to lead the full, productive lives that everyone has a right to. My thoughts are with her family and friends, and hope they are comforted by the fact that we all join them in celebrating a life that touched so many."
