In August 2013, the United Nations proclaimed 6 April to be the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. It is a global day to recognize “the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights, and social and economic development.” In light of the devastating coronavirus, the U.N. is urging everyone to continue to exercise with “150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, or a combination of both.” To stay fit, Special Olympics recommends athletes to exercise five days a week, eat five fruits and vegetables each day, and drink five bottles of water per day.

To help athletes stay fit and healthy during times of social distancing caused by the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, Special Olympics has resources that anyone can use indoors or outside close to their homes. Athletes from around the world have posted videos of themselves using these resources on social media as a way to encourage one another and stay connected.
