Ying Yung was born in 1980, in Chinese Taipei. He joined Special Olympics in 1999 and has radiated a championship spirit over the years. In the year 2000, Ying received the prestigious basketball shooting award in Malaysia. The following year, in 2001, he secured a silver medal in table tennis during Special Olympics National Games in Macau and demonstrated his bowling skills by winning another silver medal in Special Olympics Asia-Pacific Regional Games. In 2002, Ying’s talent in table tennis was recognized with an award in Japan. The year 2007 brought a golden moment for Ying when he clinched the gold medal in golf at Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai. Continuing his success, in 2009, he earned a gold medal in golf.
In 2003, Ying participated in the Global Athlete Leadership Program seminar held in the United States. This experience further fueled his passion for advocacy and leadership within the Special Olympics community. Inspired by his personal health story, Ying often tells how he faced dental issues that impacted his well-being. Through Special Olympics health screenings, his parents became aware of these problems and were advised of the necessary treatments. After two years of dedicated dental care, including receiving dentures, Ying was able to chew food properly and smile confidently. As a Health Messenger, he actively encourages fellow Special Olympics athletes to attend health screenings for timely medical intervention and to prioritize exercise and maintain good hygiene practices.
Since 2018, Ying has served as the athlete director at Special Olympics Chinese Taipei, contributing significantly to the organization’s mission and vision. His impact extends beyond the field, it inspires others to overcome challenges and embrace their full potential.
