Black History Month

This February, Special Olympics is celebrating Black History Month and spotlighting an integral member of the Special Olympics team, Theresa Simms-Smith, Special Olympics’ Business Services Manager.

This February, Special Olympics is celebrating Black History Month by highlighting Venisha Bowler, Director of Sport Competition Management, an instrumental part of the organization for more than three decades.

Loretta Claiborne, Chief Inspiration Officer, received recognition from U.S. Senator Bob Casey from Pennsylvania (Claiborne’s home state) during Black History Month.

During Black History Month, ESPN featured Special Olympics’ Chief Inspiration Officer Loretta Claiborne as a way to highlight her life achievements and her journey with Special Olympics while she continues to be a fearless leader for the Special Olympics Movement.

Two history-making athletes joined other Special Olympics athletes and celebrity supporters at Super Bowl LVIII in Nevada.

Black History Month continues to honor the achievements and contributions of African Americans that have been long-overlooked and ignored not only in America, but around the world. Since 1976, the United States has celebrated Black History Month every February to acknowledge and promote these triumphs and help to amplify and support African American voices and communities around the US.

Black History Month, started by historian Carter G. Woodson, has been celebrated in the United States in February since 1976 as a way to honor the long ignored achievements and contributions made by African Americans.
