David Duncan is an athlete from Special Olympics Jamaica in the North America Region. David participates in volleyball, basketball, and football. He has been involved in Special Olympics since 2008.
David’s favorite parts about Special Olympics are getting to meet new people from around the world and interacting with persons with and without intellectual disabilities.
David is excited for the congress in Berlin. He is looking forward to getting to voice the concerns of athletes within his region. He is excited to listen to and learn from athletes from the other regions of the world.
David is employed with Special Olympics Jamaica as an I.T. support. When David isn’t working or competing, he enjoys watching movies, playing sports with his friends, and learning new things.
David says that being an athlete leader means having the opportunity to voice the concerns of the athletes and work alongside the staff of Special Olympics Jamaica to come up with solutions. David says that as an athlete leader he can also represent and be the voice of athletes in Jamaica and the Caribbean. As an athlete leader he also gets to meet other athlete leaders.
Project Description
David’s grant plan is to improve unified inclusion and the understanding of what it means to have persons with and without IDD working together in the community. To do this he will have a unified workshop where athletes can showcase their skill off the playing field. Employers in the community would be able to observe the skills of athletes as well as have the opportunity to interact with the athletes to see if they would like to hire them as employees. Before the workshop athletes will be trained in interview skills.
