Minnesota
Special Olympics Minnesota offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round sports training and competition. Through Special Olympics’ athletic, health and leadership programs, people with intellectual disabilities transform themselves, their communities and the world.
If you’re a fan of courage, you’re already a fan of Special Olympics Minnesota!
Special Olympics Minnesota, an accredited program of Special Olympics Incorporated, opened its doors in 1973. Currently, 6,500 Minnesotans with intellectual disabilities compete in 17 Olympic-type sports. We offer five annual statewide competitions; six regional competitions; more than 150 area competitions, coach trainings and meetings; education programs for 3,300 coaches and opportunities for 14,000 volunteers.
Athletes can also take part in our Healthy Athletes program. Designed to improve health and fitness, screenings and education provide athletes an enhanced sports experience and improved well-being. Other opportunities include Athlete Leadership Programs, which give athletes the opportunity to participate in roles previously considered non-traditional. Through these initiatives, Minnesota athletes excel as public speakers, team captains, coaches and serve on the Board of Directors.
