Total Fitness Development

The sport of athletics encourages athletes of all abilities and ages to compete at their optimum level. Through the track-and-field-based athletics training program, participants can develop total fitness to compete in any sport. As with all Special Olympics sports, athletics offers athletes the opportunity to learn through skill development and competitive settings and to be involved in large social settings.

Global Athletics Development Strategy 2026 - 2031

Special Olympics is pleased to introduce a sport-specific approach to the global development of athletics, with a strategic focus on the 2026 – 2031 period. As one of the most accessible and foundational sports within the Movement, this initiative will strengthen our understanding of how athletics is delivered, experienced, and positioned across regions and Programs worldwide. By taking a more intentional approach to discipline growth, competition pathways, and coaching capacity, we aim to enhance both participation opportunities and performance environments for athletes at all levels.
