Healthy Communities

Special Olympics Healthy Communities began in 2012 with an investment from the Golisano Foundation. As of 2025, Healthy Communities has been activated in 159 Special Olympics Programs and has yielded athlete engagement, increased attention to health from athletes and caregivers, and significantly increased health systems partnerships. Through support from the Golisano Foundation, and in the United States in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Special Olympics Healthy Communities works to increase access to quality health care and effective prevention programming to improve the health of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Special Olympics partners with ministries and departments of health, United Nations agencies and other international organizations to create sustainable health systems and quality health services inclusive of people with intellectual disabilities around the world.

In 1997, Special Olympics Healthy Athletes began offering free health screenings and education to Special Olympics athletes in a welcoming, fun environment.

Zehra Sayin receives 2020 Special Woman Award

In recognition for her leadership and passion, and her proven record in expanding the reach of the Special Olympics movement across Belgium, Zehra Sayin, CEO, Special Olympics Belgium, was awarded the 2020 Special Woman Award at the recent Belgian Sport Women Awards ceremony in Brussels, Belgium on Friday, 6 March 2020.
