The Honduran National Basketball Federation (FENABAH) and Special Olympics Honduras joined forces to strengthen adapted sports, by beginning collaborations to foster activities from the “Basketball for Good Honduras” initiative.

On Friday February 14, in the offices of Special Olympics Honduras in Tegucigalpa, the first meeting between organizations took place, with Executive Director Gracia Méndez; National Director for Sports Development Sully Martinez, and president Clovis Morales representing Special Olympics, and Carmen Cubas, head of Minibaloncesto and Development Projects, representing FENABAH.

“Special Olympics International and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) have maintained an agreement for over a year, with the purpose of developing of basketball for people with intellectual disabilities, through Minibaloncesto (Minibasketball), since its adaptable to the needs of the Young Athletes project, where children practice basketball,” said Doménico Carnevali, Sports Consultant for Special Olympics Latin America, who supported this alliance.

Carmen Cubas (FENABAH) added that “We are hugely motivated to support adapted sports; our projects are known for being inclusive and adaptable. Since 2014 we have been collaborating with wheelchair basketball and minibasketball community projects, and from 2020 we “chose to include” even more, looking to create projects for adapted basketball to benefit Special Olympics Honduras.” In April, Basketball for Good Honduras will certify coaches for adapted sports. Meanwhile, in March, the first Unified Basketball activity took place, with teams made up of children and youth with and without intellectual disabilities.
