“Pure Energy, Joy And Excitement.”: Andrei Ungureanu of UPS Reflects on the Special Olympics Sweden Invitational Games

Andrei Ungureanu, UPS Nordic Focus on Abilities BRG Chair, reflects on the joyful Special Olympics Sweden Invitational Games 2026 and the fun-filled UPS activation.

Andrei played many roles at the Special Olympics Sweden Invitational Games which took place in Malmö from 4 to 6 September: energetic motivator at the UPS space in the Activity Zone, thoughtful contributor to the Guest Programme sessions and enthusiastic fan at competitions. And his multi-faceted support mirrors the powerful backing that UPS provided to this event as part of the thriving regional partnership between UPS and Special Olympics Europe Eurasia.

The dedicated UPS space at the Games’ buzzing Activity Zone offered the 2,000 competing athletes from 26 nations—as well as their coaches and supporters—the opportunity to engage in some fun on the sidelines of the competition across 11 sports. Andrei and his fellow UPSers enjoyed the experience just as much as the delegations they encountered. “The reaction was fantastic,” he said. “We had the opportunity to interact with athletes, young people, and their families through a series of logistics-inspired challenges. Participants could try activities such as moving pallets, building pallets with UPS boxes, and maneuvering them into position, giving them a fun glimpse into the world of logistics.”

Andrei also had the opportunity to the sports competitions, contribute to discussions about the Games’ legacy and impact during the Guest Programme and attend the Opening Ceremony which was, for him, simply a stand out moment. “Even though the rain was pouring down, the atmosphere was electric! The venue was packed with athletes, families, supporters, and volunteers, and instead of letting the weather dampen the mood, everyone embraced it.” Andrei continued, “There was so much energy, joy, and excitement. People were smiling, dancing, singing, and celebrating together. One moment that will stay with me was when ABBA's Dancing Queen started playing despite the rain. The energy was incredible, and I even found myself singing along at the top of my lungs.”

“For me, that moment captured the spirit of the Games perfectly: a community coming together, supporting one another, and celebrating inclusion, friendship, and achievement. It was impossible not to be moved by it.”

Our shared focus on inclusion, captured so potently at the Opening Ceremony, has been key to power of the partnership between UPS and Special Olympics Europe Eurasia which launched in 2021. “Supporting these Games was important to the UPS team because inclusion is one of our core values. We want people to know that UPS is an equal opportunity employer and a place where everyone belongs and has the opportunity to succeed, grow, and build a meaningful career, including people with disabilities. We believe that talent is everywhere, and that people should be recognized for their abilities, contributions, and potential.”
