Why Inclusion in Education Matters
More than 200 million children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face barriers to education worldwide. Building inclusive learning environments is essential to ensuring every learner has the opportunity to participate, belong, and succeed

Even after gaining access to education, students with IDD continue to face persistent barriers.

Challenges

Consequences

Limited participation in the classroom

Reduced access to quality instruction

A lack of belonging in school communities

These realities highlight a persistent gap between policy and practice. International commitments such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have established a clear vision for inclusion in education.

Achieving this vision requires stronger educator preparation, practical tools, and scalable models that translate principles of inclusion into everyday practice.

The Inclusion Academy was created to help address this challenge, building on the proven impact of Unified Sports® and its ability to bring people with and without IDD together through shared experiences.
