Special Olympics Haiti was revitalized in 2010 after the country was devastated by an earthquake. Special Olympics offered five Camp Shriver summer sports camps to kick start the push to make sports available to more intellectually disabled children and adults in Haiti.
Dance! About 300 people with intellectual disabilities are taking part in Special Olympics sports camps in Haitit this summer. Dance is just one of the five activities offered.
Those Camp Shrivers are operated at the local level by interested volunteers who want to help make a difference for the athletes in Haiti. That’s where the perceptions start to change and miracles of transformation takes place.
Worldwide, Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Those activities give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.
The Camp Shrivers in Petionville, Carrefour, Jaacmel, Les Cayes and Cape Haitian involves 300 athletes with intellectual disabilities. They participate in five sports: football, bocce, basketball, table tennis and dance.
