New Mexico
Special Olympics is a global organization that serves more than 3.4 million athletes with intellectual disabilities working with hundreds of thousands of volunteers and coaches each year. Since the establishment of Special Olympics in 1968, the number of people with and without intellectual disabilities who are involved with the organization has been growing, but the unmet need to reach more people with intellectual disabilities is staggering.
Because of its vast scenic beauty and rich history, our great state of New Mexico has earned the nickname “Land of Enchantment.”
However, “enchanting” is not only fitting for our state’s culture, but the more than 2,600 Special Olympics New Mexico athletes served throughout 108 communities.
Established in 1970, Special Olympics New Mexico provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in 12 Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
With the support of over 6,000 volunteers and 1,040 sports coaches statewide and year-round, SONM produces 60 competition opportunities that includes six state-level tournaments in six different cities throughout New Mexico.
Year by year, Special Olympics New Mexico athletes are given opportunities to feel good about who they are and celebrate their accomplishments through successful experiences in sports. Be apart of the fun by being a fan of Special Olympics New Mexico.
