Special Olympics has more than 20 accredited programs in Africa addressing the needs of people with intellectual disabilities in the areas of sports, health and education. Special Olympics is also working to address the correlation between disability and poverty, a key issue for the continent.

The Local Organizing Committee of Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 has announced the 11 Sub-Saharan African nations participating in the World Games held on 14-19 March 2019. A workshop to educate the new member nations on the Games’ values of inclusion and tolerance took place in Nairobi, Kenya.
