Professor Sophia Jowett discussed what the coach-athlete relationship is and how it has adapted over time. Professor Jowett, an expert in this field of research, explained the importance of the relationship between coaches and their athletes, and gave practical recommendations on how to optimize this relationship. The second speaker was Justus Wolf, German Paralympic Alpine Ski Coach. Justus discussed the coach-athlete relationship from his own perspective as a coach. Justus provided insightful information from the practical side of coaching and through his own experiences.

World Youth Skills Day
On World Youth Skills Day, Special Olympics is helping to lead the efforts in encouraging youth’s potential through skilled abilities that can lead to a more inclusive world. Over 155 youth leaders with and without intellectual disabilities are the recipients of the next round of Special Olympics Youth Innovation grants, resulting in 85 Youth Innovation Projects. This diverse cohort of youth leaders represent 52 countries and span all seven Regions of the global Special Olympics movement (Africa, Asia Pacific, East Asia, Europe Eurasia, Latin America, Middle East North Africa, North America). The American Academy of Developmental Medicine & Dentistry (AADMD) recently invited Dr. Alicia Bazzano, Special Olympics Chief Health Officer, to keynote a webinar titled COVID-19 and People with ID: Special Olympics Responds.Dr. Bazzano was introduced by Dustin Plunkett, an athlete leader who was referred at a Special Olympics Healthy Athletes screening to a local dentist, who identified him as having treatable gum cancer.Dr. Bazzano went on to discuss the health disparities that are hitting people with intellectual disabilities particularly hard during the COVID-19 global outbreak. She outlined ways in which Special Olympics is filling those gaps and shared steps that health professionals can take right away to help deliver inclusive health services.
