Temwa and Jason from Special Olympics Malawi led inclusive sports sessions featuring bocce, floorball, and other fun games as part of their work alongside the Special Olympics Africa Regional Youth Leadership Summit. The project created opportunities for young people to participate in inclusive sports while building leadership skills, connecting with peers, and promoting inclusion in their community.

About the Project

Youth leaders Temwa and Jason from Special Olympics Malawi wanted to provide more opportunities for inclusive sport participation in their community. Together, they co-facilitated sports experience sessions featuring bocce, floorball, and other fun games to promote inclusion and accessibility. The project was implemented in conjunction with the Special Olympics Africa Regional Youth Leadership Summit, providing youth leaders with opportunities to connect, collaborate, and expand their impact in their communities.

The Inspiration

The youth leaders were inspired by fellow youth leaders from Special Olympics Kenya, Zambia, and Burkina Faso, as well as the Special Olympics Africa regional team and Special Olympics Malawi staff, who provided valuable support throughout the planning and implementation of the project.

The Project

The project aimed to increase young people's participation in Unified Sports while promoting social inclusion in their local community in Malawi. Temwa and Jason also sought to create opportunities for young leaders to develop leadership skills, connect with their peers, and advocate for more inclusive communities.

The six-month project aligned with the Regional Youth Leadership Summit, providing youth leaders with a platform to expand their reach, strengthen connections, and share their experiences.

Project Impact

Through the project, community members had more opportunities to engage with Special Olympics athletes and experience inclusive sports activities. The youth leaders saw increased interaction and engagement between community members and the Special Olympics movement.

Project Leaders Reflection

Through leading this project, Temwa and Jason learned how to network and build relationships with people from different backgrounds and cultures. They also gained a greater appreciation for the importance of placing youth in leadership roles and creating opportunities to listen to and learn from young people.

Together, they strengthened their communication skills and confidence in speaking in front of others. Following the Regional Youth Leadership Summit, they were especially proud of the connections they made with youth leaders from other countries and how they could bring those experiences back to strengthen the work of their local Special Olympics programs.
