Sylvester and Donald’s project aimed to promote inclusion among students and community members in Papua New Guinea. Through workshops, peer education, creative activities, and school-wide campaigns, the project encouraged young people to become advocates for inclusion and helped create more welcoming and supportive school environments.

About the Project

The All Abilities, All Together project was developed by youth leaders Sylvester and Donald to promote greater understanding and inclusion in school and community settings. The youth leaders recognized an opportunity to help students better understand the lived experiences and perspectives of their peers, creating more opportunities for everyone to participate in their school community. Through their project, they advocated for school environments where all students feel valued, respected, and included, while encouraging young people to celebrate diversity and create more welcoming communities.

The Inspiration

Throughout the project, Sylvester and Donald were inspired by Special Olympics Papua New Guinea (PNG) athletes, whose determination, talents, and positive engagement demonstrated the importance of creating inclusive opportunities for everyone. They also received tremendous support from Special Olympics PNG volunteers and staff, whose dedication helped coordinate activities and ensure project success. Together, athletes, volunteers, and staff demonstrated the power of teamwork and shared commitment in championing inclusion.

The Project

All Abilities, All Together combined education, advocacy, and student engagement. The project included a series of awareness workshops at schools, which introduced students to IDD and encouraged discussions about inclusion. Through interactive presentations, students learned about the challenges individuals with IDD face and explored ways they could be more supportive to classmates and community members.

Peer education activities were also introduced to empower students to become advocates for inclusion in their schools, sowing seeds for future youth initiatives. The project also incorporated creative arts and performance activities, providing students with opportunities to express their ideas about diversity through a different medium. Finally, to extend the message beyond workshops, Sylvester and Donald implemented school-wide awareness campaigns, utilizing posters and social media outreach.

Project Impact

Sylvester and Donald’s project successfully achieved its objective of increasing awareness and understanding among students and community members. By the conclusion of the workshops, students demonstrated a much stronger level of understanding, indicated by the final reflection activities. During final feedback forms, the youth leaders were left with overwhelmingly positive responses from participants.

Most importantly, beyond increasing awareness, the project helped establish a foundation for more inclusive school cultures, where students of all abilities are valued and encouraged to participate by their teachers and peers.

Project Leaders Reflection

For the youth leaders, the greatest success was not only increasing awareness, but also inspiring young people to become advocates. Knowing that the participants of their project left with a better understanding of inclusion and a stronger commitment to inclusion made the experience especially rewarding.
