Bridging the Gap was a project led by Special Olympics Jamaica Youth Leaders Akeilia and Jhurae following the Unified Youth Exchange with Special Olympics Washington, DC. The project brought together students with and without IDD through teacher workshops, a student exchange day, and a Unified Sports Day.

About the Project

Bridging the Gap was organized by Youth Leaders Akeilia and Jhurae from Special Olympics Jamaica following the Unified Youth Exchange between Special Olympics Jamaica and Special Olympics Washington, DC. During the Exchange, Youth Leaders worked together to identify challenges related to inclusion in their communities and develop projects to address them.

The project included teacher workshops, a student exchange day, and a Unified Sports Day to raise awareness about inclusion and encourage a more inclusive school environment. Through these activities, Akeilia and Jhurae aimed to equip teachers with strategies to create more inclusive classrooms and help students build meaningful connections with their peers.

The Inspiration

The project brought together students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) for a day of fun, learning, and connection. Through inclusive activities, Akeilia and Jhurae created opportunities for students and community members to interact, learn from one another, and celebrate their differences. The event encouraged greater understanding, promoted acceptance, and strengthened community bonds.

The Project

The project organized a fun day to bring together students with and without IDD. Akeilia and Jhurae created an environment where community members could engaged with and learn from students and each other. The event helped to foster greater understanding, promote acceptance, and ultimately strengthen community bonds.

Project Impact

By the end of the project, teachers and students had gained a better understanding of inclusion within their school communities. Participants explored ways to engage more thoughtfully and constructively with students and peers of diverse abilities.

The Youth Leaders achieved their project objectives and received positive feedback from participants and their families, who appreciated the opportunity to enjoy a day of fun and social interaction in an inclusive environment.

Project Leaders Reflection

Akeilia and Jhurae's favorite memory was witnessing the joy on the students' faces as they participated in the activities. Through the experience, they learned the importance of adaptability and flexibility in project planning. They adjusted activities to ensure everyone could participate fully, reinforcing the value of creating accessible and inclusive experiences.

They are most proud of the sense of community fostered throughout the event. Seeing students, families, and volunteers come together to celebrate diversity and inclusion was incredibly rewarding and demonstrated the impact of their efforts.

Looking ahead, Akeilia and Jhurae plan to continue promoting inclusion by advocating for more inclusive events and activities in their community. They also hope to establish partnerships with local organizations to create additional opportunities for interaction and engagement among students with and without IDD.
