Unified Schools
Evan, Chris, Thalia, Seylah, Addison, Shantell, Austin, and Logan organized a Unified Color Run in Southern California, bringing students, teachers, and local businesses together to celebrate inclusion, promote Unified Sports, and raise awareness of Special Olympics.
About the Project
Over six months, the Youth Leaders brainstormed ideas, developed an event plan, and connected with local businesses to promote and support the Color Run. Through their collaboration, they aimed to engage their community and build support for their local Special Olympics program.
The Inspiration
The Youth Leaders were also inspired by Special Olympics athletes and the joy they experience through the programs and opportunities created for them.
The Project
The Youth Leaders developed key event materials, including programs, posters, sponsorship packets, and T-shirts. They also led extensive community outreach, contacting local businesses, gyms, fitness centers, and community organizations to promote the event and secure support.
Local vendors helped create a festive atmosphere by donating food and drinks, including offerings from an ice cream stand and a Mexican food stall. Through their planning and outreach, the Youth Leaders transformed their vision into an engaging community event.
Project Impact
Students from different backgrounds and grade levels joined in the celebration, while teachers and staff volunteered and cheered on participants. The event demonstrated how a shared goal can unite an entire school community and create meaningful opportunities to celebrate inclusion, school spirit, and teamwork.
Project Leaders Reflection
The Youth Leaders were especially proud of the outreach and engagement they achieved and the opportunity to share the mission of Special Olympics and the impact of Unified Sports with a wider audience.
