Unified Sports
Britany and Denisher organized a Unified Sports Day in Jamaica, bringing students with and without IDD together through sports, games, and creative activities to expand inclusive opportunities in schools and their wider community.
About the Project
Britany and Denisher set out to expand Unified Youth activities in Jamaica, with a particular focus on schools. At the time, there were no Unified Schools programs in the country, inspiring the Youth Leaders to create opportunities for students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to connect, participate, and build relationships.
The Inspiration
The Project
Building on the event's success, the Youth Leaders expanded the initiative to include a children's home, extending opportunities for connection and inclusion beyond the school environment. With plans to make the event an annual tradition, they established a foundation for continued engagement and collaboration.
Project Impact
By bringing together students with and without IDD from different schools, Britany and Denisher fostered an environment where everyone could participate, have fun, and form meaningful relationships. The Youth Leaders were proud to create a welcoming space where students could connect through shared experiences and celebrate their differences.
Project Leaders Reflection
Looking ahead, they plan to continue raising awareness among their peers through social media and other platforms, while engaging with their broader community to promote a culture where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.
