As part of the Regional Leadership Summit, Daniel and Bethuel participated in leadership-building activities alongside youth leaders from across Africa. They then organized and hosted an inclusive basketball training program in local schools, bringing together local youth and athlete leaders to build leadership skills, strengthen peer connections, and promote inclusion.
About the Project
As part of the Regional Leadership Summit, the project brought together youth leaders from across Africa to participate in leadership-building activities and learn how to advance inclusion in their communities. During the Summit, Daniel and Bethuel organized and hosted an inclusive basketball training program that engaged local schools and brought youth and athlete leaders together to guide participants, strengthen leadership skills, and build stronger peer networks.
The project also created opportunities for participants to share feedback on the training sessions and events. As the project progressed, Daniel and Bethuel saw growing enthusiasm and engagement with Special Olympics programs in their community.
The Inspiration
Inspired by their faith and values of service and humility, Daniel and Bethuel were proud to use their leadership roles to give back to their community. They are grateful to the parents, friends, teachers, and mentors who supported and encouraged them throughout the project.
The Project
Through the project, Daniel and Bethuel developed skills in cooperation, time management, and humility while gaining insight into how other Special Olympics Programs operate and comparing their experiences with their own community.
They continue to reflect on their journey and the lessons they learned, carrying those experiences forward as they continue to spread the message of inclusion.
Project Impact
The project combined an immersive basketball training with leadership-building opportunities through an elite school mentorship program. These experiences helped prepare Daniel and Bethuel to organize and host their first youth event at their school.
The project surpassed its objectives, giving the youth leaders an opportunity to give back through shared experiences, gifts, and stories that they will forever cherish.
Project Leaders Reflection
Daniel and Bethuel’s favorite memories included shared dinners, warm-up exercises, and the new friendships they formed throughout the Summit. Many of these connections continued even after they returned home to Dar es Salaam, reflecting the lasting impact of their experience.
