Youth leaders Tae Hyun and Moon Kyum hosted futsal practices and games to promote physical well-being, inclusion, and teamwork among youth with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Through shared experiences, participants developed their futsal skills, built connections, and showed how sports can bring people together as one team.
About the Project
Youth leaders Tae Hyun and Moon Kyum organized small-sided futsal practices and games to promote physical well-being, teamwork, and inclusion among youth with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Through regular opportunities to play and learn together, participants developed their futsal skills, built meaningful relationships, and gained a greater appreciation for one another. The project demonstrated how futsal can bring people together and create a team environment where everyone’s contributions are valued.
The Inspiration
Both youth leaders had previously participated in Unified Sports programs and experienced firsthand the positive impact of inclusive athletics. Inspired by the friendships, teamwork, and sense of community they developed through these experiences, they wanted to provide similar opportunities for others.
Throughout the project, Tae Hyun and Moon Kyum were also supported by special physical education teachers at Ivy Vision Center, who provided guidance and helped create an accessible and welcoming environment for all participants.
The Project
The project consisted of regular futsal training sessions focused on developing technical skills, tactical understanding, and teamwork. Participants practiced passing, dribbling, communication, and game strategies, all while learning the importance of working together towards a common goal. Tae Hyun and Moon Kyum emphasized that every player’s contribution was valuable, helping participants understand that success depends on teamwork rather than individual performance. Victories and setbacks were celebrated equally as learning opportunities, reinforcing resilience, sportsmanship, and mutual support.
Project Impact
The project positively impacted participants’ physical, social, and emotional well-being. Through consistent participation, youth improved their agility, coordination, endurance, and confidence. Individualized instruction tailored to different ability levels ensured that every participant had opportunities to succeed and make progress. Beyond physical development, the program helped youth with and without IDD build connections, strengthen relationships, and experience a greater sense of belonging.
Project Leaders Reflection
Tae Hyun and Moon Kyum were proud to see the growth participants demonstrated throughout the project, including improvements in physical abilities, self-esteem, and teamwork. With the support of dedicated volunteers, the youth leaders created an engaging environment where participants could enjoy futsal, celebrate one another’s successes, and build confidence through shared experiences. Looking ahead, they hope to incorporate a wider variety of activities in future programs to continue expanding opportunities for inclusion and engagement.
