Jerry’s project brought his community together through seminars, workshops, and an inclusive sports day focused on health, safety, well-being, and inclusion. The project engaged new youth leaders, strengthened inclusive programming, and encouraged the development of Unified Schools and school programs.

About the Project

Jerry, a Youth Leader from Special Olympics Tanzania, used his Innovation Project to create inclusive programming focused on health, safety, and well-being.

Through a series of events and activities, the project also supported the development of new Unified Schools and school programs, engaged new youth leaders in the movement, and strengthened inclusive programming in the community.

The Inspiration

Jerry extends his gratitude to his parents and the Special Olympics Tanzania staff for their support in planning and hosting the project. Their guidance helped him bring his vision for a more inclusive community to life.

The Project

The project hosted seminars and workshops on health, safety, and well-being at a local venue in Tanzania. Jerry took the lead in developing the itinerary, inviting participants, and coordinating the events. With guidance from Special Olympics Tanzania staff, he also created channels for monitoring, communication, and evaluation and facilitated both virtual and in-person orientations.

The project culminated in an exhibition sports day, where participants came together through sport and signed the “Pledge to Include,” making a commitment to creating a more inclusive community.

Project Impact

Jerry’s project was the first in his village to bring community members together to discuss important topics including health, family, advocacy, and well-being. The project exceeded its original participation goals and engaged new youth leaders who expressed interest in continuing to contribute to the Special Olympics movement.

Building on this momentum, the venue has been booked through the end of the year to host additional sessions and continue engaging the community. Jerry is also planning a “Phase Two” project inspired by relationships developed through the Innovation Project: a Unified field trip for students from a local school to experience inclusive sports in practice.

Project Leaders Reflection

Reflecting on the project, Jerry shared that his favorite memories were meeting and collaborating with the remarkable people who shared his vision for inclusion.

He is grateful for the opportunity to introduce Special Olympics and its message of inclusion to a community that had not previously engaged with the movement and is excited to continue building on the connections and momentum created through the project.
