Four youth leaders from Special Olympics Ontario created an inclusive sports club where students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities could come together through sports, games, and activities. The youth leaders organized and adapted activities to ensure everyone could participate, while encouraging more students to get involved and creating greater awareness of inclusion and Special Olympics.

About the Project

Four youth leaders, Amy, Ashley, Charlee, and Jackson, wanted to create more opportunities for young people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities to connect through sports. Their project established and organized an inclusive sports club that brought students together outside of their regular classroom activities and inclusive events.

The Inspiration

The youth leaders were inspired by seeing more students participate, connect, and have fun together in an inclusive setting. They wanted to create a welcoming environment where everyone felt comfortable getting involved and taking part in sports and activities.

The Project

The project used sports and recreational activities to promote inclusion and raise awareness of Special Olympics. Activities were adapted to ensure that students of all abilities could participate, feel welcomed, and have fun together. The project also encouraged students to become involved in their school’s inclusive events club, creating an ongoing opportunity for students to connect beyond the project period.

Project Impact

The project engaged new young people in Unified Sports and encouraged more students to participate in their school’s inclusive events club. It also helped create greater awareness of Special Olympics and demonstrated how sports can bring young people together in an inclusive environment.

Project Leaders Reflection

The four youth leaders are most proud of the difference they made in creating a more inclusive community. By the end of the project, they began seeing students who would typically sit out become more involved in games and activities. Watching students who had previously been hesitant to participate join in was a meaningful reminder of the impact of their work.

One of the youth leaders’ favorite parts of the project was meeting new people and learning about them through introductions, fun facts, and stories about where they came from. Through the experience, they also learned that creating successful events takes significant planning, hard work, and resources. These lessons strengthened their leadership skills and gave them greater confidence in their ability to create opportunities for inclusion in their community.
