As part of the Global Youth Leadership Summit, Cyrus and Sean Peter used soccer and basketball to promote inclusion in two schools in Uganda. They identified two new Unified Schools, brought students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities together through mixed teams, and helped students participate as athletes and Unified partners.

About the Project

The project used soccer and basketball as tools to raise awareness of the importance of inclusion in schools and the local community. Youth leaders Cyrus and Sean Peter identified two new Unified Schools, registering students as athletes and Unified partners and creating opportunities for them to promote inclusion through sport.

The project was part of the Global Youth Leadership Summit, which brought together youth and athletes from across the world to strengthen their leadership skills, plan and host large-scale events, and learn how to promote inclusion in their local communities.

The Inspiration

For Cyrus and Sean Peter, the inspiration came from seeing Unified pairs working together across two different centers and recognizing the power of bringing young people together through sport.

The Project

The project took place at two schools, Hill Preparatory School (Naguru) and Mukono Integrated Schools. At both schools, Cyrus and Sean Peter used soccer and basketball to bring youth with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities together.

The project began by creating mixed teams where students could play, practice, and learn together. Through games and team activities, participants became more comfortable with one another and began encouraging and supporting their teammates.

Soccer and basketball created a fun and welcoming environment where everyone could participate according to their abilities, demonstrating how sport can be a powerful tool for inclusion.

Project Impact

The project promoted inclusion within two school communities by bringing students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities together through sports, leadership activities, and awareness initiatives.

The impact extended beyond the students, with teachers and school leaders also recognizing the importance of creating welcoming and inclusive communities.

Project Leaders Reflection

Through the project, Cyrus and Sean Peter strengthened their communication and public speaking skills and gained confidence in sharing their ideas, speaking with other young people, and advocating for inclusion.

Looking back, they learned that even the toughest challenges can be overcome when young leaders work together toward a common goal.

They plan to continue training youth leaders in the schools where they have been working and hope to expand the project further in the future.
