The Inclusion Through Sports and Recreation project aimed to create a more inclusive, supportive, and accepting environment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to participate in sports and recreational activities. Youth leader Tinotenda worked to promote individual well-being while increasing awareness and understanding of people with IDD throughout the community.
About the Project
Youth leader Tinotenda noticed opportunities to strengthen inclusion and expand participation in sports and recreational activities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in schools and communities. Through the Inclusion Through Sports and Recreation project, Tinotenda aimed to create more inclusive, supportive, and welcoming environments where people of all abilities could participate, showcase their strengths, and experience the benefits of sports and recreation. The project focused on building awareness, fostering understanding, and creating more opportunities for connection and participation across schools and community spaces.
The Inspiration
Tinotenda’s project, Inclusion Through Sports and Recreation, was inspired by his older sister’s dedication to Special Olympics, where she competes as a walkathon and running athlete. Driven by the desire to support her and other individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Tinotenda wanted to embed inclusion into schools and communities in his city, Marondera. He was supported by Special Olympics Zimbabwe staff, his family, and his team members throughout his project.
The Project
Tinotenda’s goal was to create a space where individuals with IDD had equal opportunities to participate, engage, and thrive in sports and recreational activities. To achieve this, Tinotenda implemented several activities focused on promoting inclusion in schools, challenging stereotypes and misconceptions, and fostering greater understanding among participants. The project also created opportunities for individuals with IDD to engage in sports, social activities, and recreation while building connections with peers and community members. By highlighting the talents, interests, and abilities of individuals with IDD, Tinotenda helped strengthen a culture of inclusion, respect, and belonging.
Project Impact
Inclusion Through Sports and Recreation
successfully promoted awareness and understanding within schools, families, and communities, fostering a more inclusive environment. Achieved through Youth Activation Forums within schools, Unified Sports activities, and community events including families, Tinotenda’s project emphasized the value of engaging students, families, and individuals with IDD in inclusion efforts. The project’s impact extended beyond individual participants’ success. Tinotenda notes that his family became more involved in his sister’s school and community programs, increasingly passionate about seeing her thrive.
Project Leaders Reflection
Tinotenda recalls the father of an athlete shedding tears of joy after his daughter was the top goal scorer during the netball match. From this memory, Tinotenda recognized the importance of creating opportunities for everyone to participate. He was most proud of the impact his project had upon the community.
For Tinotenda, bringing together families and community members and seeing positive feedback from attendees was incredibly rewarding. While his project is completed, Tinotenda recognizes that there is still lots of work to be done, but he is confident that he can continue to make a difference. His project, Inclusion Through Sports and Recreation, is “a testament to the power of love, dedication, and inclusion.”
