Wang and Yu led an inclusive employment project in China supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through vocational training and job placement. In partnership with universities and schools, they built training programs, conducted inclusion outreach, and connected participants to local employers. The project helped participants develop skills, secure jobs in the general workforce, and established a youth platform to sustain future inclusion efforts.

About the Project

Recognizing the lack of equal employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), youth leaders Wang and Yu partnered with university students and faculty to create an inclusive employment initiative. Together, they developed a vocational skills training program and an employment placement platform designed to help people with IDD prepare for and secure meaningful employment.

The project provided participants with vocational training before connecting them with local employers, resources, and ongoing support to facilitate successful employment.

In addition to expanding employment opportunities, the project addressed the limited public awareness of the abilities and potential of people with IDD. Through collaboration with local schools, the team conducted regular outreach on inclusive practices and established a school-based inclusion alliance.

The Inspiration

The project was inspired by the unique strengths, perspectives, and dedication of the young team members working together to promote inclusion. Their shared commitment to creating equitable opportunities motivated them to develop a sustainable pathway to employment for people with IDD.

The Project

The project focused on increasing employment opportunities for people with IDD by creating a collaborative platform that connected schools, businesses, and the broader community. Through vocational training, employer partnerships, and employment placement support, participants gained valuable skills and access to meaningful local employment opportunities.

Project Impact

The project empowered several students with IDD to strengthen their vocational skills and successfully secure employment in the general workforce. Beyond individual outcomes, the youth leaders established a regional youth collaboration platform that will continue to support inclusive employment initiatives and sustain future projects.

The project created transformative change by enabling participants to overcome barriers, develop confidence, master new skills, secure employment, and become more fully integrated into their communities.

Project Leaders Reflection

When asked about their favorite memory from the project, the youth leaders reflected on seeing trainees confidently demonstrate the professional skills they had developed and showcase their abilities within the community.

The youth leaders attributed the project's success to strong teamwork, adequate resources, professional guidance, and a clear implementation plan that helped turn their vision into lasting impact.
