Monica and Arnoldo are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from El Salvador looking to promote inclusion and health through their Youth Innovation Project.
Monica and Arnoldo were upset by the stereotypes and discrimination faced by people with intellectual disability in their local community, so they designed a project to combat it and create an inclusive environment for their peers. Their project will combat this discrimination through an inclusive Zumba activity. Together, they will train other youth pairs at their school with lectures on how to promote inclusion and then host inclusive (and fun!) Zumba training.

After the initial training, Monica, Arnoldo, and other youth leaders will travel to homes for children who were abandoned because of their intellectual disability, where they will host Zumba classes in order to promote health and bring joy.

Monica and Arnoldo hope that during their project they will be able to promote their message that people with intellectual disability should be taken into account and included in their community. Their fellow youth leaders will see the abilities and value of those with intellectual disability and join in the Unified Generation’s fight against the exclusion of youth with intellectual disability
