Wendy and Gabriela educate youth in El Salvador to raise awareness about and sensitize their community to I.D.
About the Youth Leaders
Wendy, a young lady who has volunteered and made many friends within Special Olympics, is the sister of Samuel, a renowned Special Olympics athlete. She believes that being part of the unified generation has changed her life completely. Today, she is very empathetic and wants to dedicate herself to changing the world. She feels a deep responsibility to make more open spaces, not only for her brother, but for everyone with any disability.

Gabriela, 24, is a young woman eager to show everyone what she is capable of. She is very happy to be an athlete and to be a part of Special Olympics as someone who carries the message of inclusion through several creative and innovative projects.

The Inspiration
We were both inspired by seeing youth with ID in school, who were not always understood by their peers. We knew they needed more attention and support. People (including their peers and other parents) were shying away from them. This motivated and inspired us. We wanted to make a better space for youth and all people with ID that exist in society.

The Plan
1. Give a talk to raise awareness
2. Raise awareness among teachers, fathers and mothers of family
3. Involve people with intellectual disabilities in a drawing or painting contest about the importance of inclusion
4. The judges will be followers of Special Olympics
5. Award presentation
6. Compile a book with all the drawings about inclusion

Project Goals
  • To sensitize and raise awareness among young people with and without disabilities
  • Develop young leaders who spread the message of inclusion
  • Greater participation of people without disabilities in social spaces
  • New Unified Schools
  • Successful planning and execution of activities
  • Clear message of equality
